Filipino Presidents at the Blair House

The Blair House serves as the official guest house of the White House. Previous Blair House guests include Presidents Elpidio Quirino (1951), Ferdinand Marcos (1966 and 1982) and Corazon Aquino (1989, together with her youngest daughter Kris). Writing for the Washington Post over a decade later, a Blair House chef remembers President Aquino hosting the members of the U.S. House and Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1989.  In the middle of their elegant dinner, water poured from an overfilled tub upstairs, flooding a section of the newly renovated Blair House, to the consternation of President Aquino’s guests. She laughed – pointing out that it was just like her Philippine home during a storm, with buckets placed under leaky ceilings – quickly putting all her guests at ease.

A photograph of President Aquino and her daughter Kris is on display at Peking Gourmet (6029 Leesburg Pike, Baileys Crossroads, VA 22041), a restaurant in Northern Virginia popular among visiting dignitaries. The photograph was likely taken in 1989.
