The Battle of Manila Bay

A few years ago we visited the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia. The Museum features the USS Olympia, Admiral Dewey’s flagship. We saw the exact spot where Dewey stood on May 1, 1898–119 years ago today–and said to the captain, “You may fire when you are ready, Gridley”.

With these words, the Battle of Manila Bay began and Dewey forever changed the destinies of two nations and the Asia-Pacific Region.
